KEEPERS Takes A Roadtrip Across The Causeway To The George Town Festival, Penang

Posted on May 08 2013

Carrie K. Artisan Jewellery and selected Singapore artisans come together for George Town Festival 2013.

Singapore, 8 May 2013 - Carrie K. Artisan Jewellery will take its quarterly artisan showcase, Keepers, up north to Penang’s vibrant George Town Festival this June.

‘Keepers Goes to George Town’ is Keepers’ first overseas foray and will see independent designers from Singapore join artists, performers and craftsmen from Malaysia and beyond to celebrate the region’s rich heritage of the arts and culture.

George Town Festival is Penang’s annual festival of arts, culture and heritage –a feast of music, dance, film, foods and visual spectacle. The month long festival will be held from 7 June - 7 July, in Penang, Malaysia, and will showcase a blend of local cultural and cutting edge international performances and events.

Highlights include ‘Taking Off’ - an opening ceremony that takes to the skies with master kite makers and kite fliers from the region; the all-new trail of art and greenery, ‘Secret Garden’s of Earthly Delights’; and specially commissioned contemporary dance performance, ‘Bridges & Kaki Lima’, inspired by traditional street performances of Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, among others.

“We admire the spirit of independent creative retailers in Singapore: their positioning, innovation and approach to building brands and products that are artisanal and relevant,” said Joe Sidek, George Town Festival Director. “This curation of ‘Keepers Goes to George Town’ adds a dimension and personality to the exciting and contemporary festival. We hope festival- goers will be similarly inspired.”

‘Keepers Goes to George Town’ will be hosted under the ‘Singapore House’ initiative: a pop-up retail concept store and exhibition space. Comprising a cross section of creative talent from the country, Singapore House will showcase a selection of artisans, artists and designers who reflect the growing pool of independent creative talent in Singapore.

"Georgetown is such an inspiring hotbed of creativity. It embraces contemporary art and design, yet still values heritage and traditional craftsmanship," said Carolyn Kan, founder of Carrie K. Artisan Jewellery. "This is the very essence of what Keepers stands for, and our dream is to grow a community that is passionate about craftsmanship and unique, contemporary design. Being a part of the Georgetown Festival is not just an amazing opportunity for Keepers partners to showcase overseas, it is also a chance to be reinvigorated and inspired by what we will learn from the artists and artisans at the Georgetown Festival."

Keepers aims to cultivate a community that appreciates the work of independent designers and artisans. Each showcase is organized with a different theme and brings together like-minded people who seek out “better” rather than “more” things. Guests are given a unique retail experience as they learn about the artisans’ craft and hear unique stories behind the products by meeting them. Similarly, the George Town Festival, in its fourth year, aims to showcase the best of arts, performance and design from the region and simultaneously highlight the vibrant and diverse culture of Malaysia. The George Town Festival will give Singapore artisans exposure to new audiences and the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by the culture, arts and artisans of Penang.

Penang-bound Keepers artisans include:

• Ong Shunmugam - A contemporary womenswear label that re-evaluates traditional Asian wear
